What are Cookies?
A "Cookie" is a small text file which is stored on your computer, tablet or smartphone when you visit a website. They typically contain data on websites visited, which your browser software stores when you surf online without a prompt. If a user frequently visits an encrypted website, this process does not have to be repeated on each occasion thanks to a Cookie. The Cookie provides the information to the website that the user has already visited the site. A Cookie can also record information about your surfing behaviour and forward this without your consent. The Cookie can be checked by the user at any time and can also be deleted, since it is visible.
Types of Cookies
- Indispensable Cookies. They are a prerequisite for the website functioning properly and are used, for example, for the management of a login and the related services. The validity period of the Cookie is associated with the duration of the usage session (when the browser is closed, they are deleted). Their deactivation may prevent or limit the use of customer services. The publicly accessible part of the website in question remains unaffected and fully functional.
- Analytical and qualitative Cookies. These are Cookies for collecting and analysing the traffic and the use of the website in anonymous form. They facilitate the determination of whether the user connects to the website on numerous different occasions, without actually identifying the user in question. They also allow monitoring of the system to increase the service efficiency and user-friendliness. These Cookies can be deactivated without the website losing any functionality.
- Marketing/advertisement Cookies. These are permanent Cookies, which identify the user (in anonymous form or not) to save their preferences and to adapt the navigation accordingly. The above-mentioned websites does not use this type of Cookie.
Lifespan of Cookies
Certain Cookies (session Cookies) are automatically deleted by closing the browser or logging off the user session. Other Cookies "survive" the browser being closed and are active when the user visits the website once again. The Cookies are referred to as permanent Cookies and their duration will be determined upon creation. There are Cookies with a finite life and infinite permanent Cookies. It cannot be excluded that permanent Cookies are implemented and modified by the use of services from third party providers within our website, which may be used by the third party providers for the purposes of profiling.
Third-party Cookies are Cookies, which are transmitted by a different provider than that of the website visited by the user. When a user views a website and another unit transfers Cookies across, then these are third-party Cookies. An example of this is "Social plugins" for Facebook, AddThis und Google+. The typical purpose of this is to enable or facilitate the sharing of content to the respective social network platforms.
